Treating Fibromyalgia symptoms with Reiki

Fibromyalgia is a chronic disorder with generalized muscle or joint pains manifested as tender points with associated fatigue, sleep disturbances, memory and mood changes. There is no definitive cure for fibromyalgia; a variety of medications can help control symptoms. Exercise, relaxation and stress-reduction measures also may help. (2). It is also understood that Fibromyalgia is a psychosomatic disease. Hence most of the conventional medicines are effective till the time they are being taken thereafter the symptoms return back.

Reiki is a safe, holistic form of treatment. This ancient form of therapy believes in treating the patient as a whole rather than focusing on only the diseased part. A Reiki session can help ease tension and stress and can help support the body to facilitate an environment for healing on all levels – physical, mental, and emotional.(3)

Reiki is a simple, natural and safe method of spiritual healing and self-improvement that everyone can use. It has been effective in helping virtually every known illness and malady and always creates a beneficial effect. It also works in complementary with all other medical or therapeutic techniques to relieve side effects and promote recovery.(1) Reiki is not an indicated cure for any form of disease or illness, but it may help the body in bringing back the lost harmony by channelizing the flow of energy .

Reiki is not an instant cure; however it serves as therapy wherein the benefits are more internal and hence the ailments get eradicated from the root cause. Let us understand how Reiki shall help patients suffering from fibromyalgia –

Alleviation of anxiety and relaxation issues – The word Reiki comes from the Japanese word (Rei) which means “Universal Life” and (Ki) which means “Energy”. Reduction in the energy flow leads to weakness. The sensations and the breathing exercises that are done during the therapy session help the mind and body to relax. A relaxed mind will suffer less from panic attacks or anxiety prone situations.

Some small studies have been conducted to determine the effectiveness of Reiki. They suggest that patients may use Reiki to find relief from not only the physical aspects of chronic pain, but also the anxiety that often comes with it. According to an article from the University of Minnesota, several studies found that Reiki treatments seem to relax patients, reduce fatigue and depression, and strengthen a person’s overall sense of wellbeing. According to an article by Anthony Schifano on the National Fibromyalgia and Chronic Pain Association’s website, Reiki sessions have brought relief and helped individuals feel more balanced. He writes that patients who received Reiki treatment experienced “total relaxation, less tense muscles, and improvement in their range of motion.” One patient who suffered with fibromyalgia pain for years was able to stop taking pain-relieving medications after starting regular Reiki treatments.(5)

Alleviation of pain – There is widespread pain in fibromyalgia which is characterized as a dull aching pain that could possibly lead to sleeplessness and even inactivity. Reiki can help in reducing pain and muscle tension. Reiki can resolve them by allowing healing energy to flow freely. The result is reduced pain and tension, as well as feelings of relaxation and rejuvenation. Unlike most other treatments, Reiki is a multi-purposed method that can heal both physical and emotional ailments.(4)

Inducing a calm sleep – Fibromyalgia has sleeplessness or disturbed sleep as one of its feature. Reiki by the way of creating a harmony and optimizing the energy flow in the body helps by calming the mind and body. Reiki helps to reduce the amount of fatigue faced during the day time.
